The text of a scanned PDF document can be converted to real text using the original text file, tools for optical character recognition (OCR tools) or by retyping the text. Scanned PDF documents are not accessible, and should be avoided. There is e.g. no need to scan the entire document to include a signature.

There are two ways to remove barriers, either you make adjustments to the original document and generate a new PDF document or you make changes directly in the PDF document. If you have access to the original document we would recommend to make your changes in e.g. LibreOffice or Microsoft Office to make them available for the next time you make a content update to your document. When the changes are done the PDF document can be checked again using the Tingtun PDF checker. If you only have access to the PDF document then you can use an online PDF tool like PAVE or purchase a desktop application like Acrobat XI Pro Accessibility Checker.

Tags are part of the PDF specification and add metadata to PDF the document to define logical structures like headings, tables and figures. Tags allow screen reader users to navigate document headings, use text alternatives for images and so on.
